The USA presidential election reminds me of the 1980'sElection in Jamaica. Remember those days when Edward Seaga accused Michael Manley of being a socialist even a communist. Those days the socialist label was a death knell for any politician.

Republican John McCain is now 3 decades later accusing Obama of being a socialist. Reason he wants to tax the rich and give tax cuts to the middle class. Obama said he will give tax break to those who make less than $250,000 per year. Guess what? We are just finding out that only 5% of American makes over $250,000 per year. So 95% of Americans are saying to Obama, socialize me baby.

It is interesting to note that John McCain wants to give a major tax break to himself and the other 4.999999999% of Americans. So what do we call that? Fascism, McCainism, Bushism, Capitalism, Marxism, Socialism? How comes his plan does not have a name? Also what do we call the 700 billion dolllars of tax payers money that Bush is giving to the banks? I guess Save Ameircaism.

EARLY VOTING EXTENDED IN FLORIDA

Steve Schale, Florida State Director, Obama for America, has reported that Charlie Christ, governor of Florida, declared “a state of emergency.” Governor Christ has explained that there is an overwhelming number of Floridians eager to cast an early vote. With that said it was necessary for him to expand the early voting period.

Schale states in his email sent out to millions of Obama supporters, “Effective immediately, every early voting site in the state will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. through Friday, October 31st, and for a total of 12 hours between 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1st, and 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 2nd.”

This is an Executive Order, we have been given all the resources necessary to vote, now it’s up to us to go out and make the difference. For more information call-1-877-235-6226 or contact your county's Supervisor of Elections.

Why are Jamaican Women Bleaching their Skins?

The latest fad in Jamaica is skin bleaching. Skin bleaching is the process of using various chemicals on a black person’s skin to make it appear brown or even white? While this practice is prevalent among women, a few men have gotten into the act also. Skin bleaching is encouraged mainly by the perceived notion of racism and classism. It is widely believed that if your skin is white or brown you get ahead better in life. The women will get a man quicker or even a job. This notion has been aroundthe Jamaican society for years. See video below for more:

Jamaicans who are US citizens but residing or staying In Jamaica can vote in Jamaica at the US Embassy. The Embassy is located at 142 Hope road in the Kingston/St.Andrew area. It is a big relief that people do not have to travel to the States to vote as this would be very costly and deter many people. We hope that one day Jamaicans abroad will have the same opportunity to vote in Jamaica elections too.

Vending In Clarendon

Thank you Mayor Brown for your plans to do the right thing. Registering Vendors in Clarendon is the right thing to do. This will help to enable you to keep a track of who is in the market and its surroundings. This is a very good move seeing that the market place is said to be a part of the problem that breeds the crime that exists. If your plan for registering the vendors is implemented this would be a part of the solution.

The police cannot talk about going to other place to fight crime. If crime is taken place in the market and its surroundings then they need to be patrolling the area frequently to fight that crime. If they need more officers then the Government and Minister of security should provide more officers on the street all over the Island.

Jamaica main problem is crime right now therefore we need to increase the police force. If someone is bleeding to death and complaining of hungry you have to stop the bleeding first before you feed that person. If we ignore the bleeding to feed that person the out come will be grim because that person would be dead. The same goes for Jamaica we cannot keep fumbling around.

We have to get control of what is destroying our future and that is CRIME and MURDERS. This is our priority and we have to address it right now. How long are we going to sit by instead of bonding together and find solutions that will make a difference? Again I say thank you Mayor Brown

American and Jamaican Citizenship

Reading the article Not Important in the Gleaner Oct.26, 08 it stated that Mr. Seaga gave up his American citizenship in order to serve in Jamaica’s Parliament. This is very interesting seeing the presently we have Members of Parliament who were allowed to run and are presently in the parliament. I think this is wrong and should be stopped immediately. If Mr. Seaga had to give up his America citizen then they should have given up theirs too before they decided to run. It is not only the responsibility of commission of election but also the responsibility of the person running to know the constitution that governs the country.

The court time should not be wasted trying such cases. These members of parliament should be disqualified without this rigmarole. Every one know that Mr. Sega was not born in Jamaica they could have seek his advise regarding the situation and we would not be having this argument. I respected Mr. Seaga for doing the right thing. He did not try to fool people or disregard the constitution.

If Obama Wins

Listening to Senator Obama and watching his reaction to the lies that he faces daily while he campaign tells a lot. Obama can resolve issues and disagreement tactfully and intellectually without disrespecting and diminishing the other person. This shows that he will be able to resolve issues diplomatically and use force only when deem absolutely necessary. This attribute is very important to let peace reign and to command respect.

For peace Obama will make a lasting impact the world has never seen before.

In regards to assisting other country Obama has to take care of the America financial crisis in order to help other. Think about traveling on a plane the flight attendant always inform you that in the case of an emergency you should put on your oxygen mask first before assisting others.

America will continue to help countries especially if they are desperately in need but I don’t think that they will be able to do for others as they have done in the pass. This is not because Obama is not willing to but that American situation has changed and many countries and its government including Jamaica have to do a lot more for themselves.

According to an article in today's Gleaner by former Jamaican PM Edward Seaga, neither Obama or McCain presidency will be of any significant benefit to Jamaica as it was during the cold war. This may be true since the threat of Communism has waned considerably in the region the US does not see any reason to pour money on Jamaica in order to discourage communism. However the US has an interest in democratic economies remain stable. If a country becomes unstable it is more likely to shun democracy in favor of dictatorship and extremism.

Right now the Jamaican economy is suffering more due to the recession in the USA. If Obama wins it is more likely that he will want to pursue a policy of growth and fiscal responsibility just like President Clinton. He will especially encourage growth among the middle class. If the USA has more employment, less national debt and an overall prosperous economy, then countries like Jamaica will benefit from the spin off.

Many people believe that countries like Jamaica and even African Americans on a whole are seeking handouts. They are not. What they are seeking is a climate which is conducive to progress. If African American gets the opportunity to go to college, they will go, look at Obama. If they get the opportunity to play basket ball they will play, If they get the opportunity to play golf they will play. You get the point.

Give Amnesty to Taxi Operators, Legalize them!

I never can understand why the Government allows unlicensed, unqualified, unknown and bogus Taxi Operators to roam the street day and night posing dangers to citizens, in every aspect of their operations.

According to a report in the ‘Daily Gleaner’ dated October 24, 2008, Deputy commissioner Mark Shields reported that the murder rate against women has gone up 30% over last year. He went on to say criminals posing as Taxi Operators are responsible for many of these crimes against women and also children.

One of the major problems we face in this category is that there are too many unlicensed and unknown Taxi Operators on the street. I spoke to many of these operators who told me that they would do anything to get a license but it is easier to become Prime Minister of Jamaica than to obtain a taxi license. Some of these operators have been operating as ‘robots’ for over 20 years or more. Also the cost for these licenses is so astronomical that as usual it encourages the regular bribery in order to get one.

The truth is that with the high unemployment rate these taxi operators are not going anywhere. They will remain on the road. The government needs to allow a 180-day amnesty where every single taxi operator should obtain a license, making it affordable. After 180 days if anyone caught operating a taxi without a license he or she will be immediately sent to jail and the car is seized permanently.

Many will argue that you can’t give every would be taxi operator a license. The fact is that license or no license he/she is going to be on the road. Wouldn’t it better to know who you are dealing with? If the license number is stamped on the vehicle and the photograph of the operator displayed inside of the car, he or she will be less inclined to commit a crime.
