I have the pleasure of reading Ms Coopers article “Pearnel’s slip of the lip,” in the Gleaner dated March.21 2010 and it is with respect and pride that I am commenting on her article. Ms Cooper you made me very proud to be a Jamaica. You fill my heart with happiness as you write about what is good about Jamaicans and Jamaica no matter where they live. We have a lot to offer the world in whatever aspect our contribution is require whether it be science, arts or math.

I am a proud Jamaica who grew up in the in the ghetto but have grown up to help people in my adult life and as a nurse I have experience and have to deal with many people good, bad and indifferent; rich ,poor, and in the middle; black , white and in-between.

It is a shame that Mr. Pearnel Charles was so disrespected to another human being base on where she lives or is living. Uptown or downtown is a part of Jamaica so until people like Mr. Charles realized that and work to improve downtown then all Jamaicans are loosing whether you live uptown or downtown, whether you speak English, Spanish, French, Latin or patois. You are not going to be Judge by the world because of where you live or the language, you will be looked upon as a Jamaican.

I am a proud Jamaicans and my only regrets that I have living in the ghetto is the memories of the guys that I did not get the chance to see them grow up because of the influences of those who would visit them and make them believe them that they mean them will but their influences led them in the wrong direction and ultimately the loss of their lives. But I have many good memories growing up such as playing games and eating together we all like one big family. So living in the ghetto is not all bad but there is room for improvement such as the roads and the schools.

Speaking patois or living in the ghetto should not matter just like being black, brown or white. What should matter is a person’s character.
