Paula and Peter Imafidon are just like any other 9-year-olds. They love laughing, playing on the computer and fighting with each other. What sets these twins apart from their peers, though, is that they are, hands down, prodigies who are about to enter high school and make British history as the youngest to do so.

The precocious London-based tykes, known as the “Wonder Twins,” floored academics a year ago when they aced University of Cambridge’s advanced mathematics exam. They are the youngest students to ever pass the test.

The future little scholars’ father, Chris, and mother, Ann, immigrated to Britain from Nigeria more than 30 years ago and have actually been down this prodigy route before with their three older children, who are also overachievers.

The couple’s oldest daughter, Anne-Marie, is now 20, but at age 13, she won a British government scholarship to take undergraduate courses at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Christiana, 17, their other daughter, is the youngest student ever to study at the undergraduate level in any British University at the age of 11. Youngest daughter, Samantha, now 12, passed two rigorous high schoolevel mathematics and statistics exams at the age of 6. She mentored the twins to pass their own math secondary school test when they were also 6.

Even with all of this, the proud dad denies that there is any particular genius in his family. He does credit his children’s success to the Excellence in Education program for disadvantaged inner-city youth. “Every child is a genius,” he said. “Once you identify the talent of a child and put them in the environment that will nurture that talent, then the sky is the limit. Look at Tiger Woods or the Williams sisters — they were nurtured. You can never rule anything out with them. The competition between the two of them makes them excel in anything they do.”

The darling duo are competitive to say the least, and this is what fuels them to out-achieve each other. Paula said, “I am excited to pass, but I should have got higher than Peter.”

As far as career paths Paula says she wants to be a math teacher, while Peter aspires to be prime minister one day.
All it takes is a dream….

As a middle age man who graudated from Ferncourt High School in 1974, I am very happy to see my old school headlining the news. However, I am extremely unhappy that the school makes the headline for the wrong reasons.

Ferncourt has never been one of those flashy high schools with great athletes and fanfare but it has produced some very bright and successful students. Located in the small town of Claremont, St. Ann it has always been the pride and joy of the people of the garden parish.

Well, the ugly fangs of crime are now spreading its tentacles. No one and no places shall escape. When one schoolboy decided that it was worthwhile to wear someone else’s crest as a guise to enter a small town school compound to murder another schoolboy, we have to wonder if judgment is already here. At no time during the hunt it occurred to this student to back off, let it go, done with it.

This reflects a society that is out of control. One should not only follow the numerical aspect of the daily murders that are ravaging the country, but pay special attention to how these murders are committed.

These murderers go on their missions without a single fear of reprisal.

These murderers show no respect to our security forces or any other authorities. The people of Jamaica suffer quietly while lives are snuffed out daily.

The faculty, staff, students and parents of Ferncourt should not allow this incident to tarnish the school’s image permanently. Everyone should work together to assist the grieving parents of both students go through this terrible ordeal. In the meantime the school’s administration should re-assess the school’s security.

Ferncourt, we still love you.

Alvin Buchanan

There is an influx of universities in Jamaica. Even though it is good that many students who want to go further in regards to their education aspirations now have the chance to do so. It is however very important for these students to check and double check some of these universities.

It is a shame that even though we have “The University of the West Indies” that have limited space for a chosen few and who never see the need to expand in Jamaica until last year. Because of the lack of tertiary opportunity the opening was vacant for other institution to come and fill the existing gap. And come they did in droves. Education investment is such an opportunity that was ignored by the Jamaican government and prominent Jamaicans’ who could have financed such a venture.

I do know that many of these universities are originated from America and that many Jamaicans believed that having an American University certificate is all good. One of the things you don’t want is an American certificate that you spend thousands of dollars on and hundreds of hours studying for only to find out that the certificate you hold so dear is of no use or value.

This is why it is very important for you to check the accreditation of the university that you are applying to and spending your hard earn money with. Some university may be accredited by the state that it is in only therefore that certificate is only of some value in that particle state.

Some of these Universities are also made up that offer quick certificate by doing a minimal course on the internet for a price .Most of these certificate and school are no good. Therefore check and make sure who you are paying your money to in exchange for what.
