Sickle Cell Disease

I am pleased that Professor Graham Sergent and his team in Collaboration with the ministry of Health have set up a program to test for sickle cell disease. This is a very important endeavor this will make most people know if they have sickle cell or the trait. They will also be educated in regards to the cause, treatment, and preventative measures.

This simple blood test can prevent many years of heartache and pain. I have witness the pain that people go through during a sickle cell crisis and it is heartbreaking.

When I discovered that my newborn son was a carrier my entire family were tested. My son and I have the trait and he is aware that if he wants to have children his girlfriend or wife cannot have the trait. He is also aware that if he has a child and the mother has the trait then they can have a child with the Sickle Cell disease.

I hope that many young adults are willing to take this very important test and I also hope that this test will be provided in the hospital for all newborn babies and that genetic counseling and education will be provided if needed.

STAMINA

Jamaicans (especially the men) have always boasted and take pride in themselves that they are capable of enduring and sustaining, prolong and stressful conditions. Jamaica have a variety of natural food and drink that they say are used to enhance their potential. Eating fish especially doctor fish, steamed with vegetables such as carrots, ochre seasoned with scallion and thyme. They like to drink carrot with ginger in addition to fruit such as pineapple, mango, etc. I must also mention sour sop, Irish moss to name a few. I am not aware of any scientific fact to their claim except for the nutritional value that some of these food or drink may provide. Then again one may say that there may be some truth to there claim when you take a look at the athletes Jamaica produces. What is your view?
