Deadly Drugs
Dr. Vendryes article in the Gleaner June2, 2009 in regards to the increase use and quick fix as it relates to medication and the diseases that they cure. He also made references to the abuse of many control medications that are customarily used for pain and or depression. There seem to be an increase in the amount of drugs that are now being prescribed by Doctors in Jamaica, and although I believe that sometime it is necessary to give certain medication because the prognosis of a patient depends on how quickly the disease is addressed and the intensity of the administration of the treatment to be delivered. But as the Dr, rightfully stated that lifestyle plays a huge role as it relates to a person health. This is where proper diet/nutrition and exercise come into place.
My mom who is a diabetic for 30 plus years who I considered as doing very good with minimal complication that is associated with the disease. She has been taking her metformin for years in association with diet, exercise and regular appointment to see the Dr, to keep abreast of her illness. She was very surprised last month when she went to the clinic and the Dr. added not one or two but a total of five new medications to the ones she’s is already taking.
I was not surprised by the classification of the medication she had received because I know that these medications are customarily given to diabetic patients. What I was surprised about is the amount of new medications that was given to her at one time. That the reasons for and the use of those medications was not explained to her nor was the side effects. Patients should be made aware even in the simplest form what problem they are having and the reason for the medication and the side effects. This way they won’t be overly anxious regarding the medication if they know the benefits, the side effects and how to take them properly.
Not everyone like my mother is fortune to have someone to call; therefore it is the Dr. or nurse responsibility and job to enlighten their patients. If one has access to a computer they can always get information regarding medication and their benefits and side effects. It is good to have empowered patients even though some when given a little knowledge takes it too far but that’s a different story.
