Today is the much anticipated General Election in Jamaica. The approximately two-month old Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) leader and Prime Minister is going up against People’s National Party (PNP) leader Portia Simpson. Once again this is an election that no one can confidently predict the outcome. There are polls showing the PNP with a slight lead and other polls showing the JLP with a slight lead also. Both parties are, as expected, claiming that they will win easily. There is a large number of newcomers vying for offices also and this may give rise to many surprises in the race. Whatever happens tomorrow Jamaica will have a new leader with a 5-year mandate who is going to face a country with very high unemployment, still too high crime rate, a dissatisfied population and many other problems. This coming 2012 Jamaica will also celebrate its 50th anniversary from British rule. Interesting times ahead.
