It has long being pondered why it so difficult to conquer the crime monster in Jamaica. Recently it is revealing, what everyone has already know, that a significant number of police constables, even senior officers are committing crimes or worse yet working in conjunction with the criminals.

Many Jamaicans already suspected that this was happening and some even witness it ng. However no one would come forward for fear of being executed along with their families and pets. The present police force is perceived as so corrupt that the citizens are scared to report many incidents to them. With the creation of the ‘King Fish’ division communication has improved somewhat as these officers have gained the respect of many of our citizens.

There is hardly any recent major criminal operations in Jamaica now that an active police or ex-police officer is not involved in. The recent incident in the Salt Springs, Montego Bay area, where the country experienced a dose of anarchism has already put two cops under the microscope as investigations continue. Many of these police officers started their criminal activities with the help of the Jamaican people. We like it when we offer a police officer a few thousand dollars to drop a speeding ticket but we do not like it when the same officer or his cronies show up at our house to extort or rob us.

Finally, we have to encouraged the good cops who, sometimes in fear, are trying to uphold the law that they swear to uphold. The commissioner should not spare any change in ensuring the protection of the cops who are enforcing the laws. They must be given all the tools to work it because the way things are now without the good cops we are doomed as a nation.
