Will Jamaicans See A General Election This year?

Court gavel The Jamaica Court of Appeal is set to hand down a ruling this Friday on whether Member of Parliament (MP) Daryl Vaz has the constitutional right to hold that position. A lawsuit was filed by Abe Dabdoub after he lost the seat to Vaz in the last general election. Daddoub is contending that Vaz holds US citizenship and he is barred by the Jamaican Constitution to hold the position of MP. Dabdoub won the first round but Vaz appealed the lower court decision.

This is getting to be very interesting. The ruling JLP party now holds 32 of the 60 seats and there are a few more seats in contest for the same citizenship question. Prime Minister Bruce Golding had indicated that he would rather call a new general election than hand over power as a result of court ruling. Stay tune.
