Usain Bolt Competes in France Today, Promises ‘Something Special’
Two days before the Meeting AREVA, the three times olympic champion Usain Bolt
was in Paris today for a crowdy press conference held at the Hotel Pullman Tour
Eiffel. Laurent Boquillet, director of the Meeting AREVA, and Bernard Amsalem,
president of the French Athletics Federation were also present. Here are the
highlights:
About Paris
« When I was 17, I came here in Paris to attend the World’s. I was good. I didn’t
compete but I had a good time in the village with my bicycle, hanging around. It was
a great experience. This year, I am here to compete and to do my best on Friday. If
the weather is as good as today, which is wonderful, it should be something special. I
don’t like to say how special it could be, but it should be special. I love to perform for
the fans. They come not only to see races but also to see personalities. »
About the crowd
« At the World’s Juniors in 2002, in Jamaica, the crowd was huge. It was the first time
I was so nervous in my life. I was nerves breaking. They were shouting my name
before I was actually starting my race. I felt really nervous about it. The crowd doesn’t
fear me any more. I can use this pressure now. It should be good in Paris in front of
50.000. »
On Tyson Gay
« We didn’t really talk about Tyson Gay with Glenn Mills (his coach). I don’t fear any
athlete, no matter what time is running. Because I am confident. I am confident
because I know I trained a lot. And when I trained a lot, when I am in a good shape, I
don’t fear anyone. »
About his confidence
« You know what? I enjoy track and field. I am always a confident person when I go
on the track. Nothing could really break my confidence. When I lose, I just have to
find out what I did wrong, work hard on it and bounce back. One day, my coach say
something good: « You have to learn to lose before you can win ». I’ve learned from
it. And I’d like to say I am not over confident. I am just a confident guy. »
About World Record
« I can run fast all the time. It depends on my feeling on the track. If the weather is
good or not. Sometimes you feel good, sometimes not. It can happen all the time,
you never know. I don’t know my limits. I train everyday to run quicker. To run better,
you sometimes need less competition in the race. It’s much easier sometimes when
you mind his free. As I said, it depends on the track, the wind, the weather… »
About his « show » before and after his races
« I think the fan enjoy me giving them a good time. It’s just my personality. Before the
race, dancing help me to relax. After the race, it’s just fun ! I am working on a new
dance for Berlin. I’ll do it in Berlin… may be, I’ll offer the fans a small preview! »
About Berlin 2009
« For me, it’s very important. I got silver last time at the World’s Championships. So, I
am definitely working hard to get the gold this year. It’s very important. It would be a
great step for me to enter in the Legend. If I win the World’s, I’ll show everyone
Beijing was not a one-shot. I don’t’ know the track but someone told me it bounces a
little bit. The track may improve its quality until the World’s»
On his « bad » start in Ostrava
« We watch my race in Ostrava on video with my coach. We worked on that and I
think we found the problem now. I should have a fairly good start now, in Paris… »
